Cellular Phone Reverse Search is Available to Anyone

by Duncan Millows

You need to figure out who owns a certain cell phone number. Perhaps someone is frustrating you with prank calls. Or, perhaps you came across this number in the cell phone contact list of your spouse. Perhaps you just stumbled upon a random number in a drawer. You could want to figure this out for numerous reasons. Sadly, it’s a lot more difficult to perform a reverse lookup for cell phone numbers than landline numbers? What’s the reason? To protect people’s privacy, cell phone numbers aren’t provided in phone books.

Think for a minute what it would be like for telemarketers to be calling your cell phone several times daily trying to get you to buy something. This would certainly occur if cell phone numbers were stored in a public database. In the big scheme of things, maintaining the privacy of these numbers is no doubt a good thing.

But let’s get back on track. How do you go about finding information on the number’s owner when it is not listed? You could certainly try a search engine, such as Google, search on the number and see what information, if any, is returned. But this probably will not be successful since most people do not put their cell phone numbers on public websites where they could be located by the search engines. You might just directly call the number and find out who answers. Maybe you would impersonate someone, saying that you are looking for their information to correct some records or something to that effect. This, however, is not a good idea. First, the owner of the number would now know that something is going on. Second, doing so could very well be illegal.

So, do we have a safe, legal, productive, and hopefully free method of searching for someone’s cell phone number? Happily, there is an answer to this question. While cell phone numbers are unlisted by phone books and public records, they are held by the phone companies within their internal databases. Obviously, you do not have access to these databases yourself. There are some companies that buy access to these databases from the cell phone providers and then compile the data into one big database consisting of current information on just about every cell phone number in the United States. You can then easily search this database to determine the owner of the cell phone number in which you are interested. While the access to such databases is not exactly free since the phone companies initially charge for this information and for reasons of privacy, the annual fee charged is nominal and you receive an unlimited number of searches.
