Don’t Let The Red Ring Of Death Happen To Your Xbox 360 – 4 Tips

by Marc Sandford

The Xbox 360 is no different from most other complex machines. Proper usage and a little maintenance can help prevent breakdowns and problems later on. With the 360, the problems we’re talking about are the red ring of death and other heat related issues.

If your machine is in good condition and works well, you’ll want to keep it that way by practicing the following 4 machine maintenance and usage tips.

1.) Dirt and dust free environment.

Your console must be kept clean of dirt and dust. Don’t store or use it in dirty or dusty places. Excess dust in the vicinity or on your console can get sucked into the machine through the vents.

A buildup of internal dust insulates and doesn’t allow heat to escape from the motherboard. Dust and dirt also obstructs the vents, which further impedes cooling.

2.) Closed in or stuffy environments.

The console needs lots of air to avoid getting too hot. There are fans inside the console that draw in cool air and expel hot air. If your machine is enclosed in a cabinet or kept in a cluttered corner, there won’t be enough air available for effective cooling.

3.) Temperature of operating environment.

The console can build up heat in abundance. So it’s a good idea to only use it in a location that is cool. When you do exercise that’s strenuous, are you more likely to get heat exhaustion in an area that’s hot or cool?

This type of common sense also applies to your usage of your console. Don’t use it in rooms that are too warm, or in direct sunlight or next to a heater or furnace. Basically, stay away from any source of heat.

4.) Your Xbox works very hard, so give it a break!

Which activity will cause you to get overheated? Doing the Boston marathon or taking a stroll? Well, the same line of reasoning applies to the overheating issues of your console.

Playing 3D high definition games generate a lot more heat than live arcade games. When playing demanding games, take occasional breaks from your gaming. Your console needs the time to cool off.

Remember, your Xbox 360 is a frail machine especially when it comes to overheating. With proper care and maintenance it will give you many hours of gaming enjoyment.
