Guide to HEPA Air Purifiers

by Jane McCormick

HEPA air purifiers are very popular in the market. HEPA is the abbreviation for High Efficiency Particulate Arresting. These air purifiers remove particulates that are suspended and minute from the air, thereby purifying the air from all particles that are suspended in air, and may be a potential harm causing agent or an agent that may cause various allergies to people inhaling them.

HEPA air purifiers use materials made out of polymers and fibers of which captures any microscopic particle that might be found in the air. HEPA air purifiers don’t only capture dust but also mold spores and bacteria as well as viruses. Many HEPA air purifiers are available claiming that they are 99.97% effective when it comes to filtering particles that are as minute as 0.3microns, but in truth HEPA air purifiers has the ability of only filtering air flowing through it and so this claim might not always be true in most HEPA air purifiers, due to the fact that not all of them have been designed to allow air to flow freely through the filter without being cleaned back into the room.

HEPA air purifiers usually use an active material of which is carbon based to help in the absorbing of chemicals, gases and odors. There are many kinds like thin mats of Air-O-Swiss filters or several pounds seen in the Austin Air Purifier.

These purifiers are often used in vaccum cleaners as they are highly beneficial to people suffering from allergies, like asthma as they trap dust mite fences and pollens which are proven to affect susceptible people.

However during purchase customers should be careful to avoid similar products, which are not genuine HEPA filters, also called as ‘Sealed HEPA’. Many of these imitations are very similar in naming and are often advertised as HEPA type or HEPA-like or sometimes even labeled as 99% HEPA. These products are only imitations and can never yield the results that are given by true HEPA filters as these are intelligently designed to prevent air leaks.
