Led Capture

Although several figures associated with the Confederation created controversy in the years since the war, few have been more controversies that Nathan Bedford Forrest.

A man of contradictions himself, it is not surprising that Forrest arouses such strong feelings – or respect or disgust – as people. Nor does this surprise Forrest, who was also in contention for his life as he is now.

Getting there first with the most. Nathan Bedford Forrest

A self-made man really if ever there was one, Nathan Bedford Forrest was born in 1821 into a poor family in Tennessee. When his father died, leaving a wife and twelve children, Forrest, then 17, took the head of the family. In 1858, Forrest was a Memphis city alderman, owner of several plantations, slave trader, and a millionaire.

At the beginning of the civil war in 1861, Forrest, who has been exempted service by its status as a planter instead chose to join the Confederate army as a private. It equipped an entire regiment with horses weapons and equipment out of his own pocket, his superiors in the Army and the Governor of Tennessee, surprised both by the voluntary service of Forrest and largesse, he ordered a colonel.

Forrest had no military training, but it was a quick learner and soon had command of his own regiment. His regiment, a number were African-American, it was reported that when the war started, Forrest offered freedom to 44 slaves in exchange for his service in the Confederate army, and that only a desert, the rest remains with Forrest until the end of the war.

In many major battles of the Civil War, Forrest has distinguished as a courageous soldier and a good leader. He fought at Fort Donelson, Shiloh and Murfreesboro, moving quickly. It is a remarkable fact that Forrest is one few general, union or Confederate, who started the war as a private and ended as a general.

The lack of military training notwithstanding, however, Forrest not only distinguished himself in the service of the Confederation, but also revolutionized the war. Known as "wizard of the saddle," Forrest mobile tactics regiment would later lead the horse to the vehicle in modern warfare. Another Forrest ideas that have continued to find use was the concept of special forces; interesting Forrest Elite company, as he was known, understood at least eight African-American soldiers.

However, Career Forrest General was not without scandal, in April 1864, General Forrest led his troops in the capture of Fort Pillow in Tennessee. Many Union soldiers defending Fort Pillow were African American, and the battle ahead, which most soldiers, both white and black, were killed, was the subject of a congressional investigation as to whether the attack was indeed a massacre, driven by resentment Confederate soldiers for African Americans. While Forrest was cleared of charges of war crimes related to the battle, it was then known in the North as "Fort Pillow Forrest."

When news of the surrender of General Lee at Appomattox Forrest reached in Florida, too, surrendered. He had been wounded several times during the war, had 30 horses springs under him, and his cavalry included 65 African-American soldiers when he went.

Financially devastated by war, Forrest went to work for the track. By the time of his death, his circumstances were poor.

Reduced circumstances Forrest did not humble, still a controversial figure, even after the war. One of the most infamous Forrest may or may not be plucked after war was the formation of the Ku Klux Klan. Although he denied any official involvement in the Ku Klux Klan, Forrest has been appointed honorary Grand Wizard a KKK convention in Nashville in 1867. Forrest apparently did not support the activities of the KKK, and in 1869, disgusted with the violence and harassment operated by the Klan, ordered them to disband. tactics increasingly violent, ordered the Klan to disband, saying the Klan was "being diverted from its original purpose, honorable and patriotic, becoming injurious instead of subservient to the public peace. "When Congress has examined the activities KKK in 1871, they determined that there was no evidence that Forrest had either led or founded the KKK and its involvement consisted of efforts to dismantle the organization.

Forrest efforts to distance themselves from the Ku Klux Klan were apparently sincere in 1875, he became the first white man to speak to the Independent Order of Pole-Bearers Association, a civil rights organization composed of freedmen. Short speeches by Forrest included statements on the right of free men to vote for their candidate of choice and hope for an expanded role for freedmen in the South. He shocked many, both black and white, ending his speech by kissing a girl one of those freed on the cheek.

Reputation Forrest continued to grow both as a revered leader and a representative of the racial hatred in the years since the war. Regardless, he is a figure that continues to fascinate.
