I admit it. I am technologically challenged. It took me a while to understand, let alone appreciate the diversity and utility USB.

What exactly does it do?

USB means Universal Serial Bus. The first time I heard This, I thought my days of driving a big yellow school buses and filling seats with serial killers. Was it something I wanted in my house?

It proved correct. I have not been attacked or crushed and I have loved these little USB home. They were simple – just plug and play. Yay! Something that I could understand. And I have four slots available on my computer. I wondered what these were for.

My printer uses a USB port, as most do, I think. They are designed to replace parallel connectors and series – you know, those bits of all the little branches. Many other things use USB nowadays, too. Keyboards and mice, PDAs and phones phones, game pads and joysticks, cameras and camcorders, scanners and photocopiers, iPods and MP3 players, lights and fans, and funky little add-ons.

There are these things small rectangle called flash drives or hard drives or thumb break. They drive to the store for you really fast and really pick up your groceries. No, they are storage units small program that will save your commands with a USB cable pluggy thing on the end. These were replace disks and CD storage.

The tech savvy young guys I work with get excited to see an old floppy. Most of them have never seen one. It's like finding Elvis or one of his LPs.

Most of this stuff that I do not use it … yet. I tend to be technologically resistant. I finally started using a cell phone about two years ago or so. I try to catch up the delay, but even with all the cool things there, we always run into limits.

The U.S. presidential USB

I have a single USB port on my laptop. I use my laptop to listen to music and watch TV, but mostly working on my novel. I love be able to move while I work, or take it to another room or another location altogether.

I have only one printer / scanner / copier. If I want to print something from my laptop, I have to crawl under my desk, take my USB cable from the printer, plug it on my laptop, and then do everything in reverse when I'm finished.

Moreover, I have only one USB port on my laptop! If I wanted to plug in some future command prolific jump and a PDA, a fight could break out and I might get hurt. And if I get more four things USB plug on my PC? I could have an anti-riot and my office is in tatters.

Fortunately, there are a multitude of solutions. There are USB extenders that extend your reach USB. There are intersections that will divide a USB port into several. Some of them also sit on your desk if you Smack your head not on its underside more. No more stars and profanity. Unless you want.

There are cards that you (if you're brave) or your computer guy or girl can add your computer to provide more locations. There are all kinds of adapters that convert almost cool any plug thingy weird or slide in a USB port. They also work for those laptops that do not have USB ports. How dare they!

Most of these items include wireless capabilities. Soon everything will be wireless, cable will become the new disk, and it will be invisible signals dancing everywhere. Maybe they will add lights and laser shows we have little.

I converted the old USB. Yeah, it took a little longer that some of you, but I still have Watergate and flowers on my head. Ok I exaggerate, but I know I am not alone and I hope Making it easier for others who feel a little overwhelmed by all this.

I have not seen this bus full of serial killers either.
